The Man...

Before I go, I promised. My homily.

August 8th Feast Day of Saint Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of the Preachers (Popularly known as the Dominicans)

A Saintly Man

I am highly devoted to a single man, a single man that right now I feel like I’ve known him all my life. A friend, whose name is part of my solo artist band, a name who I talk about everyday, a man I can finally celebrate, a trait that he has wield that explains pretty much my whole life, prayer, this man was a man of prayer, who took what was in his heart and gave it to others.

Dominic. Our Holy Father Dominic. As I talk about him on his Feast Day, a day of celebration, of song, praise, and prayer let us remember who he served for his whole life, and who we are servants of in our lifetime and who people will be servants of in the lifetimes to come. God, God the Father Almighty!

There is this on-going story, which is one of my all time favorite stories of the Saints.

That Dominic would be in his monastery, all day and all night, but during the night he wouldn’t sleep, he would get up and go to the chapel and stay up all night, praising, praying, singing, outstretching his arms to God. His fellow preachers peaked through what they had in their monastery like a little secret window and they would watch Saint Dominic, praising, singing, praying, outstretching his arms to God, and it was a phenomenal sight to see for these fellow preachers. To know that someone, one of them was setting aside his rest hours to spend extra time with God.

And that’s what we need to do, we need to set aside our video games, our fantasy books, our television, we need to set everything aside and praise, sing, pray and outstretch our arms to God, who is the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, we need to spend time with God. Talk to God, greet Him in the morning, dedicate our sleep to Him, we need to do something.

Now I’m not saying to not sleep for forty-eight hours! Be all means go ahead and sleep, I don’t want your parents or religious sisters scolding me since their Superior scolded them for not sleeping even though they were doing one of the greatest possible things.

I’ve always pictured myself doing what Our Holy Father Dominic did, definitely singing no doubt about that since I’m a musician, but I’ve always prayed. Prayer is SO important today, and the world needs prayer today.

You know, I’m thinking right now. How excited the Dominican Order is on this day, particularly New Jersey, Nashville, and Ann Arbor. Makes me curious as what they are doing…

So, before I go. Today, be like Dominic, who was great man, say “Holy Father Dominic pray for us!” Be a Saint, be a founder, be Saint Dominic on his Feast Day, and ask for his guidance and prayers, and remember what he did, he Prayed, Loved, and Forgave. Spend time with our Father. Through anything…the sacraments, adoration, mass, a walk in the park or around the block. Just be like Dominic…

O, Saint Dominic, whose example is just perfect for the truth and witness of God, may your Feast Day gifts be offered to you on your Feast Day, as your Order of Preachers the Dominicans Feast with you. May you guide us and the world into a life of prayer and praise, filled with joy and love, and to help us remember to take what is in our hearts and share with the world. Amen!
